Throughout 2019, I and some others at FCBC plan to go through the Navigators’ Topical Memory System. The “TMS” is a collection of Bible studies in five series using targeted Bible verses to anchor and illustrate various aspects of being a disciple of Jesus Christ.
A. Live the New Life – What does it look like to live a life in obedience to Jesus?
B. Proclaim Christ – How do we bear witness to the Gospel?
C. Rely in God’s Resources – How do we learn to trust in God’s power and not our own?
D. Be Christ’s Disciple – What does it mean to deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow Jesus?
E. Grow in Christlikeness – What are the characteristics of Christ that the Spirit produces in his disciples?
As we go through this, we will share illustrations that help us treasure these Scriptures in our hearts, tying them to images and concepts so that we can recall them when needed.
Though the TMS is laid out in weekly studies, we aren’t going to rush through this. Our plan is to spread the entire series over the course of a year, with some time to rest, catch up, and reflect. We will also schedule times where we can gather and discuss what we have learned, share news of God’s work, and encourage one another.
If you would like to participate, you just need to get the book (available at NavPress, or at many other online or brick-and-mortar venues), which comes with memory cards for all the verses in several English versions of the Bible. If you cannot afford to purchase your own, please stop by. I am ordering a few extra copies to have on hand to give away. I will also be sharing the verses on the Bible Memory (formerly ScriptureTyper) app, which I have found to be a great aid in helping memorize Scripture.
You may wish to subscribe to this blog so that you will get automatic notifications when a new posting is up. We will also post links on the FCBC Facebook page.
This may seem daunting, and it is indeed a steep challenge. Praise God that we don’t do this trusting in our ability or even our own dedication, but in the power of God’s Spirit working in us. We will take time to pray for each other, encourage each other, and challenge each other.
So, what do you say? Are you in? If so, leave a comment, send me an email, or stop by and talk. If you’re not in our congregation, don’t let that stop you! Join in! And of course, feel free to share this with others.
I highly encourage you to find a person to meet with weekly to go through the TMS with you. It will help – trust me! If you don’t have a person in mind, come talk to me and let’s see who we can match you up with.
As I mentioned earlier, we will have get-togethers throughout the year (the first will be in January, date to be determined) to share with each other how things are going, encourage one another, and share tips and insights. Feel free to participate whether you can make any, all, or none of these events!
You can expect regular encouragement from this blog as well, with the first post to be available at 5am Eastern on January 1st. I’ve posted the schedule for the first series below!
Here is my proposed schedule for the first series, “Live the New Life.” It will start off slow, so even if you join a later in January, it should be pretty easy to catch up! Please note that I have made some minor changes to the proposed schedule (indicated by *).
